How I Manifested a Full-Time Remote Job in a Pandemic

Updated: Apr 2, 2022

Preface

I promised myself I wasn't going back to anybody's office. It wasn't just the pandemic, but after two years of being home (my favorite) there was no way I was going back to the office struggle--- not during COVID and not after! I love freedom, travel, and I'm introverted af, so I knew the lifestyle that I wanted required me to have a remote career.

The Backstory

During the initial shutdown and like most people who primarily work from their computers, my job temporarily transitioned to a #workfromhome (WFH) model. I used this to my advantage and temporarily relocated back East from Austin a month before my rental lease ended. I knew damn well I had no plans of returning to ATX --- not after I hauled all my belongings cross-country and damn sure not after all the racial and social atrocities that were and are continuing to show their ass in Texas.

Star Search

WFH allowed me to save so much energy and time by not having to commute. This helped fuel my job search. From January to August, I filtered my searches on LinkedIn and Indeed to remote jobs in the US, making sure to disregard the posts that listed a "remote" location in a specific state/city because many employers list jobs as #remote when they're really #telecommute or at best, WFH. There's a difference.

How, Sway?

Although I searched for roles over a ten-month period, I did not find my new job via an online job search.

A co-worker who is also a really good friend of mine sent me a job posting. My girl is a ride or die and I'm so blessed to have good people like her in my life. I applied and was not only offered the job, but I was able to negotiate an even higher salary than my previous position, you know the one back in racist TX that required workers to return to an office just to look at them and cough COVID in their faces. Wasn't gonna let that shit happen to me tho. Now, I can work my 9-5 from anywhere and I actually have more time that I can use to focus on my businesses and REST because rest is #revolutionary and #reparations.

Sis...

  1. Don't be scared to utilize your resources and people who you can trust, even if it's a co-worker.

  2. Be sure to take breaks as you need to --- being exhausted and overwhelmed in your job search is not a good look and can cause you to make careless mistakes on your applications. Trust me, I've sent apps exhausted at 3am to "dream jobs" and had to just say, "fuck it."

  3. Don't stop until you get what you want and even then, use an occasional evening or weekend to explore other opportunities. There's always something better out there.

  4. Don't forget to work on YOUR brand, company, startup, business, etc. After all, the goal is to work for yourself so you have full control over when and where you work and how much you bring in.

  5. Prioritize your wellness throughout this whole process. Meditate in between job searches, take deep breaths, or go outside and tap into nature!

I hope this helps your spirit!
